At the Cathedral, we take Jesus’ commandment to care for those less fortunate to heart. We have an active feeding ministry that prepares meals and food donations for shelters, feeding centers, and food pantries throughout Springfield. We encourage you to be a part of this vital ministry by volunteering your time or through food/monetary donations.
Rose Hutchcraft and Susan Blase will be co-chairing our newest Outreach Program at Oak Terrace HealthCare Center. This is open to anyone interested in spending an hour or so visiting with residents who do not have many visitors. The visiting hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day with the exception of meal times which are 8:00 a.m., noon and 5:00 p.m. You do not have to commit to a specific day or time and you can spend as much time as you would like. If you are interested in being a part of this new ministry, there is a sign-up sheet posted in the Café. Either Susan or Rose will contact you as we plan on meeting with Dean Brodie before starting our visits to provide you with general information and policies. Click here for a link to our blog.
Each month, the congregation participates in a challenge to line the ledges of the sanctuary with needed items. Items are donated to various food pantries or other organizations throughout Springfield.
St. John’s Breadline is a feeding center that serves between 400 – 600 meals daily. Several times during the year, members from the Cathedral volunteer to prepare and serve a meal. Food for the meal is provided solely through donations. On Annual Breadline Sunday, held every November, loaves of bread are sold to help support this ministry.
Members of the Cathedral participate with other area Episcopal churches in a cooperative effort to feed the hungry of Springfield. Each month meals are prepared, served or delivered to organizations such as the Salvation Army and Helping Hands shelters. Meals and seasonal snack bags are also prepared for the children at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
Once every month Cathedral members of this ministry prepare, serve, and share a meal with the staff and residents at one of the SPARC group homes.
