Activities and Outreach

The activities listed below are offered through most conversations, so its not a new wheel. But, it is the best way to get involved initially with your church. Please take a look at the items and if you are interested in donating some of your time or talent in one of the area please let us know. If you would like to see additional services offered through the Cathedral, Contact us. Our church needs to be known throughout our community, please help us to spread the Word.

The picture at the left was taken on our first Rally Day. The kids played while the parents and adults signed for activities. Everyone is ready to pounce on candy as Casey Jones winds up.

Activities and Outreach Through the Cathedral

Coffee HourSunday morning coffee hour is an important part of life at St. Paul's. Available after both Sunday services, coffee hour provides an opportunity for parishioners to visit with each other and to welcome visitors and newcomers. Donations help defray the cost of supplies, and a sign-up list is always available for those who would like to provide refreshments for coffee hour on a particular Sunday.

Fellowship The Parish Life Committee and the Membership Development Committee both offer a wide range of functions designed to provide fellowship and fun to Cathedral members and friends. They sponsor special dinners and receptions at major Cathedral events, social events to introduce newcomers into the life of St. Paul's, and small group activities designed to appeal to a wide range of ages and interests.

OutreachThe Cathedral serves the Springfield area by providing meeting space for organizations, including Al-Anon, Daughters of the American Revolution, Springfield Choral Society, and other community groups.

We also respond to continually surveyed community needs and focus on a different need each month.  i.e.: Contact Ministries, Helping Hands, M.E.R.C.Y., Mini O’Briene Crisis Nursery, Ronald McDonald House, and The Parents Place.

Habitat for Humanity
The Cathedral feeds the workers for Habitat for Humanity on one day during the build of a local home.  It consists of proving morning and afternoon snacks and lunch for approximately fifty workers.

St. John’s Breadline
St. John's Breadline serves a hot, nutritious meal in a clean, positive environment.  People broken by life's struggles come in each day to fill their hunger of body and soul. Yet, despite their sorrows, they share conversations over a meal in a dining room filled with light, music, and colorful people.

Outreach Continued Cathedral Child Care Center
This outstanding service to the community provides all day childcare for infants (six weeks) and young children (through five years of age).  Fifty children are regularly served in the program throughout the year.

Caregiver’s Group
On the third Wednesday of each month the Caregiver’s group meets in the Café for lunch and conversation.  This support group consists of the primary caregivers for those who are shut-ins, ill, or aging.

Dean’s Discretionary Fund
On the fourth Sunday of each month the loose plate offering is designated for the Dean’s Discretionary Fund.

Feed the Kids
On the first Sunday of every month the members of the Cathedral provide and prepare lunch for the children of St. Luke’s mission.

WorshipAcolytes
Adults and young people (from eight years of age through high school) contribute to our worship by their service as acolytes.  Acolytes must be participating, baptized members of the Cathedral.

Altar Guild
This is a dedicated group of women and men who prepare the altar and sanctuary for every service that takes place at the Cathedral.  This includes our regular Sunday services, weekday Eucharists, weddings, baptisms, funerals, and Diocesan services.

Lay Worship Leaders
Vergers, thurifers, sub-deacons, lay Eucharistic ministers, and lay readers assist with the worship services.  The Diocese licenses parishioners who are nominated by the Dean for three-year terms.  Training is conducted twice a year.

Worship Continued Music
Congregational singing is accompanied by the organist at the 8:00AM Eucharist.

The Cathedral Choir and Music Program includes many professional musicians.  However, anyone is welcome to participate. If you are interested in participating in the choir please contact the office at 217/544-5135. The Choir provides musical leadership for the Sunday Mass and seasonal services.

We host special musical events in the Community, especially the Springfield Choral Society and the Prairieland Voices.

Ushers and Greeters
Members of the Cathedral serve by greeting parishioners and visitors, presenting the elements and collecting the offering.
